Dickens Victorian Village, Cambridge, OH

Have you ever sat down to watch a classic Christmas movie and think to yourself “I wish I could visit a place like that?” Cambridge, Ohio is that place! The entire downtown area in Guernsey County is decked out for Christmas in a Charles Dickens-themed display. Where is this display? The whole town! As you travel near the Guernsey County Courthouse, you’ll notice that every lightpost, streetcorner and business window has a special scene set up to look like it came right out of a Charles Dickens classic… not to mention, the Christmas Lights everywhere!

The idea for the Dickens-inspired village came to founder Bob Ley when he was thinking of a way to attract visitors to the city and generate business. His wife, Sue, made mention of the victorian-styled buildings, lightposts and general English heritage of the area that could be used to recreate many of Dickens’ scenes. From there, Mr. Ley designed a Mannequinn that could be posed to recreate iconic scenes from many of Charles Dickens’ books.

Another attraction in the area is the Guernsey County Courthouse. Every night, the courthouse lights up for a show that is themed to Christmas music.  I didn’t keep time, but it seemed to go into 15-20 minute intervals before starting over again. This is absolutely magical! If you love to “oooh” and “aaah” at Christmas lights, then this is definitely for you! I had just arrived around 5:15 p.m. and made my way over to the  courthouse where there are benches set up. I was the only one there at that time, but by the end of the first show, there must’ve been over a hundred people that had made their way over to the courthouse like a flash mob. There were spectators singing and dancing to the music, along with cars parking on the side of the road, to catch a glimpse of the magic. It was a very unique experience to say the least!
