The number one thing I’ve learned as an intern at the Ohio State Fair: Come to work hungry! Even if I don’t have an appetite when I arrive, the aromas entice me to search the Mobile Food Finder app to figure out what to have and where to find it.
Here are some of the yummy and unique foods I’ve discovered at the Fair this week.
I found deep-fried vegetables at Salty’s Concessions, which sold over 133 gallons of deep-fried pickles at last year’s Fair.
Why they’re so delicious:
1. They’re fried!
2. The batter is buttery and frying the vegetables holds in the juiciness.
3. Easy walking food: They aren’t greasy so I didn’t have to wipe my hands every time.
4. They come in a souvenir bucket!
Not every food is fried at the Fair. The Ohio Pork Producers Council created a new food for this year’s Fair: The pork parfait. Or as I like to call it – a meal in a cup – shredded pork, mashed potatoes and barbeque sauce layered in a cup and is topped with cheese and a cherry tomato. The shredded pork is incredibly tender and melted in my mouth. The barbeque sauce had that perfect kick of hot and sweet and the potatoes mixed well with the meat. The combo reminded me of a home-cooked meal.

For dessert, I had a hot dog, cheeseburger and popcorn. Well, not really. I tried cupcakes from Kimmy’s Cupcakes that are decorated to look like fair food!
These cupcakes are SO fun, but they’re hard to eat because they look so cool! The popcorn cupcake is a scrumptious red-velvet cake, the hot dog has the perfect balance between cake and icing, the cheeseburger was the most creative and the waffle bowl sundae has a perfect amount of crunch.
These are cupcakes. Really!
Deep-fried cherry Kool-Aid is new at the Fair this year and can be found at two of the Tracey’s concessions. The texture and taste aren’t like anything you’ve ever indulged in at the Fair. It reminded me of a doughnut hole, but with an extra outside crunch and a cake center. The vanilla ice cream is sure to make your taste buds go crazy.
Not your childhood Kool-Aid!
And, don’t worry, I didn’t eat all of this food by myself; I shared it with the other interns!
So bring your game to the Fair and bring some friends…you’re going to need their help!!
