4 p.m. has never been the same for me since I visited the Silver Fern Bed & Breakfast in Peninsula, Ohio (about 25 minutes south of Cleveland). That is because 4 p.m. is when innkeeper Gary Beckley puts out homemade snacks like warm tarts and sausage rolls inspired by his New Zealand roots.
My boyfriend and I decided to zip away for a winter weekend escape. Some B&B coziness and homemade comfort food were the only items on our agenda and the Silver Fern had that ready for us upon arrival.
Gary introduces us to a few other guests who have meandered into the kitchen for snack time. By the time I wash down my mini tart with hot coffee and brush off the last crumb from my second sausage wrap, I have five new friends.
These are the magic moments that I love about the B&B experience complete with warm hospitality, delicious homemade food, big windows to watch the snow fall outside and a good dose of new friendship.
Nighttime is quiet here in the small village and the only wake-up alarm you need is the sunrise and whatever Gary is whipping up downstairs for breakfast. This morning is a pizza-sized frittata, which Gary skillfully flips in the air.
After breakfast, we are off to enjoy the blank slate of a relaxing day.
David hunkers down with a book by the fireplace in the quiet library in the home to satisfy his ‘perfect kind of day.’ My curious spirit has me donning warm layers to fulfill mine: exploring nearby the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
Here’s a snippet of what I found during my few hours exploring:
We re-connected mid-afternoon to fill a few hours just enjoying each other’s company and watching the snow which is picking up outside. David and I open the chocolates we bought from the nearby sweets store, and settled in with some movies that we downloaded. The rest of the day was spent doing nothing, but nothing until it was snack time. It was fabulous!
There are so many ways to enjoy a winter B&B getaway in Ohio, but the ones that send you home relaxed, full and happy are the ones capable of making lasting memories…and habits.
Is it 4 p.m. yet?
