June Message from Mary
It’s officially summer – the days are longer, the air is warmer – opportunities to enjoy time with friends and family abound! Whether you delight in telling tall tales around the campfire, judging splash contests at the pool, hunting for the coolest vintage finds at the flea market or dancing in the aisles at a concert put on by your favorite band – whatever it is that makes the summer yours, you’re sure to Find It Here.
We’ve been busy spreading the word about the variety of experiences to be found in Ohio. Most recently, we had booths at three Ohio Cabela’s stores (Avon, Columbus, and West Chester) as part of Cabela’s Family Adventure Day on June 10. In addition to distributing the Ohio Travel Guide and Spring/Summer Calendar of Events, we showcased our wildly popular Ohio. Find It Here. 360° Virtual Reality Experience where users can choose from 16 Ohio adventures including zip-lining, parasailing, and roller coaster-riding.
We’re excited to share our virtual reality experience at the Ohio State Fair for the first time this year! The fair runs from July 26 – August 6 and the TourismOhio/Development Services Agency booth in the Bricker Marketplace will feature a prize wheel, state-of-the-art hologram videos, and much more. TourismOhio has also partnered with nine state agencies to offer an electronic scavenger hunt that visitors can do on their smartphones while at the fair. A visit to each of the ten booths enables participants to enter to win a free night’s stay at one of the newly renovated state park cabins. To find out more, come visit us at the fair!
Last month we shared the 2016 Ohio Tourism Economic Impact results from Tourism Economics, revealing an increased number of tourism visits, tourism-supported jobs, and visitor spending. We want to keep building on that momentum and one way you can help is by participating in our 2018 co-op! We invite you to join the more than one hundred industry partners from across the state who are currently enjoying the benefits of the co-op. More information can be found here.
Last Sunday, June 25, we lost an important leader in Ohio’s tourism industry, Phil Craig. He served as Executive Director of the Ohio Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus since 1995 and was President of the Craig Group, which he started in 1990, for nearly 20 years. In 2016, the Craig Group merged with Shumaker Advisors where Phil was an integral part of the team. Phil’s leadership has made a lasting contribution to Ohio’s tourism industry, making it strong for years to come.
Thanks for all you do to deliver on the visitor experience – here is wishing you a joyful and memorable Independence Day!
For the Good of Ohio,
Mary L. Cusick
