March Madness may just be the best time of the year for a sports fan. For me, only the Super Bowl outmatches the next few weeks of college basketball. From buzzer-beaters to Cinderella stories, every tournament has a unique and exciting twist. Between Thursday afternoon and Sunday evening there will be nearly 50 games! Unless you’re an ace at the remote control, the best way to see every game is to go to your favorite sports bar.
This year I will be taking my viewing pleasure to the new Buckeye Hall of Fame Grill in Columbus. This place is a spectacle to see on its own. Forty TVs give you plenty of viewing options at the restaurant, which opened less than a year ago. Sit at a booth, grab a seat at a table or stand at one of several high-top tables. Frankly, I’m going to need all of those options for the number of hours I will be watching basketball.
At halftime of your game, take a stroll around the restaurant for a unique insight into Ohio State Buckeye history. The restaurant is outfitted with unique memorabilia, rarely-seen photographs and plenty of scarlet and gray. There’s even a Heisman Trophy! — That’s the closest I’ll ever get to winning one. One of the few drawbacks of the Buckeye Hall of Fame and Grill’s new location is a lack of game room for the kids, so be prepared to keep them occupied.
Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about one of the most important things – the food! I was blown away. On my first visit, I ordered the Buckeye Burger and I was not disappointed. It was cooked perfectly and it was one of the juiciest burgers I can remember. I also recommend the Chicken Quesadilla, very good, with just the right amount of ‘kick.’ So, whether you’re a Buckeye fan or not, check out the Buckeye Hall of Fame Grill.
As a Cincinnati native, I can’t finish without recommending one of my favorite sports bars back home. Whether it’s tourney time or not, Champion’s Grille on the west side of Cincinnati has always been at the top of my list. The bar and grill offers plenty of TVs, so don’t worry about having to lean left, right, up or down to make sure you won’t miss the game-winning buzzer beater. The food is where Champion’s really shows its might. You can build your own custom burger by choosing the size, type of bun, choice of cheese (there are 11!) and sauce. Then just sit back, watch the games and enjoy your burger. But don’t look down at your food too much, lest you miss what could be the best shot of all time.
