What’s New at the Ohio State Fair

Mark your calendar for the 165th edition of the great Ohio State Fair. Running from July 25 through August 5, the fair continues to expand with new events and performers. The fairgrounds in Columbus bustle with a variety of activities for the entire family. Expect traditional fair foods, amusements and contests. Be sure to try new foods and listen to some of the new musicians strolling the grounds or being featured on stage.

Be sure to add some of these things to your list of fair experiences:

Ohio State Fair Food

The newest fair flavor of ice cream this year made by Utica-based Velvet Ice Cream is Spicy Caramel. The cayenne-infused caramel sauce adds a bit of a kick to the creamy concoction. Other new foods include the Campfire Pretzel, with peanut butter, marshmallows and chocolate bits; Dragon’s Breath turns everybody into a dragon with these nitrogen desserts that make puffing and bellowing smoke from the nose and mouth an easy feat. Check out this complete list of foods served at the fair.

Ohio State Fair Entertainment

Strolling musicians, magicians and even a plant bring smiles to fair visitors. Jugglers add comedy to their routines, hypnotists put you on another level and a corncob tells jokes. Watch a stunt and thrill show where performers take you to the edge as they defy gravity with their maneuvers. All styles of music can be found throughout the fair. Some shows require tickets like the Beach Boys, STYX, Jeff Dunham, Trevor Noah and a multitude of other popular performers. Buy tickets for these events in advance to guarantee a seat; advance tickets include fair admission.

The famous Budweiser Clydesdales make an appearance as do popular PBS characters like Daniel Tiger and Katerina Kittykat.

The 70 rides found on the midway include several new to the fair like Sky Fall, which takes riders through an adventure on a giant 55’ upside-down loop. Rock Star is a exhilarating 360-degree, full rotation spectacular thrill ride that spins up to a height of 60 feet while keeping every rider parallel to the ground and providing a ride experience that will leave you laughing and coming back for more. Thirty rides are especially family-friendly and include Silver Streak and Dizzy Dragon.

Ohio State Fair Competitions

Traditional livestock and 4-H shows combine with interesting competitions like an apprentice plasterers and cement masons event to determine the best apprentice in those respective trades. Youngsters participate in a spelling bee. Political candidates share their platforms. Men showcase their beards and beekeepers display a beard of bees. Dogs demonstrate agility and drones race to the finish.

Synonymous with fun, the Ohio State Fair showcases the latest and greatest in agriculture, entertainment and family fun. Plan to spend a couple days to enjoy all that it has to offer.
