Sometimes a weekend getaway to explore an Ohio State Park and a stay at an Ohio State Lodge is good for the soul. The autumn season is the perfect time to escape to the outdoors, view the vibrant colorful leaves, feel the cool crisp air, warm-up by a bonfire and revel in the beauty of the season.
Located within the 1,095-acre Shawnee State Park in the 63, 000-acre Shawnee State Forest, sits the rustic Shawnee Lodge and Conference Center. The spacious lodge has 50 lodge rooms, 25 family cottages, a restaurant and bar (The Smokehouse at Shawnee State Park and Tecumseh Lounge), gift shop, two pools (indoor and outdoor), hot tub, basketball and shuffleboard courts, gym facilities, a game room, golf course and gorgeous views of southeastern Ohio’s rolling hills.
Each of the 50 lodge rooms (Standard Double or Standard King) have air conditioning/heating, satellite television, alarm clocks, telephones, mini-refrigerators, bathtubs and a private balcony with views of the surrounding forest.
The 25 family cottages sleep up to six, with two bedrooms, a bathroom, living room, kitchen, dining area, gas log fireplace, screened porch, fire ring and grill. Four of the cottages are pet friendly if you want to bring along your favorite furry friend!
My husband and I checked into our lodge room, then set out to explore the lodge. After exploring the resort lodge and taking in the gorgeous views of the rolling hills from the lodge balcony, we asked the friendly staff for hiking recommendations and found our way to the nearest trail. With 65 miles of hiking trails throughout Shawnee State Park, we set out on a two-hour hike on the marked trails (two trails begin at the edge of the lodge’s parking lot). The crisp afternoon air, the leaves crunching under our shoes and the views of the forest and Turkey Creek Lake had us feeling invigorated!
After our hike we returned to the lodge to freshen up, then grabbed a drink and appetizers at the Tecumseh Lounge while watching the Ohio State football game. We retired to our room for the night, weary from our day hike throughout the park. The next morning, we enjoyed a lovely breakfast at the lodge with views of the rolling hills. Our stay at Shawnee Lodge and Conference Center allowed us to re-connect with nature and enjoy my favorite season in the breathtaking beauty of southeastern Ohio’s rolling hills!
