A Weekend Getaway at Mills Park Hotel
By Heather Rader

Located in Greene County, the charming village of Yellow Springs has been welcoming visitors to the area since the early 1800’s. Known for its eclectic vibe, Yellow Springs has been a refuge for artisans, educators, musicians and free spirits to indulge in one’s creative side.

With limited lodging availability in or near Yellow Springs, most visitors only spend a day exploring the village. The new Mills Park Hotel offers visitors a welcoming retreat in the heart of Yellow Springs. Built upon the land of the former Mills House, the southern-style designed hotel resembles the former mansion of Yellow Springs Founder William Mills. The 24,000 square foot hotel features twenty-eight guest rooms, Ellie’s Restaurant and Bakery, the Little Miami Mercantile (hotel general store featuring local items and hotel souvenirs), banquet hall, conference room and fitness center. After four years in the making, owners Jim and Libby Hammond with their daughter Katie can finally welcome guests to their labor of love which boasts meticulous and hand-crafted wood details and southern-inspired design.

Stepping into the open and airy lobby, guests will feel an old world charm of a by-gone era mixed with fresh and bright details updated for this millennium. Fresh flowers, beautiful hand-crafted wood details (most of the wood designs are from trees salvaged from the property and hand-made by the talented owner, Mr. Hammond) and a refreshing color palate welcomes you to leave your worries at the door and enjoy your visit to the hotel and to the area.

Twenty-eight guest rooms offers visitors a relaxing stay with plush bedding, spacious private bathrooms and showcases beautiful photography and artwork from local artists. Four rooms share a large balcony overlooking Xenia Avenue, the main thoroughfare of Yellow Springs. The small details in each guest room invites guests to have a comfortable and revitalizing stay.

Located in the hotel lobby is Ellie’s Restaurant and Bakery, named after the owner’s beloved Welsh Corgi, Ellie. The restaurant decor features adorable and playful corgi paintings and murals from local artist, Kathy Moulton. Homemade baked goods, hot and ice beverages, and southern-inspired comfort food can be enjoyed for breakfast and lunch with indoor or outdoor seating. I enjoyed my coffee and lunch on the large front porch watching locals and visitors alike strolling the charming streets of Yellow Springs.

After my lunch, I sat on one of the many inviting rocking chairs on the front porch, which was the perfect spot to relax and watch the world go by. As I rocked back and forth on the southern-inspired porch, childhood memories of rocking with my grandparents consumed me. I smiled, grateful for the memories and watched the Ohio state flag waving in the breeze and thought to myself how lucky we are as Ohioans to have all this Ohio beauty surrounding us.

With Midwestern charm and southern-inspired design, the Mills Park Hotel welcomes guests to a relaxing haven in the heart of downtown Yellow Springs. Make a weekend getaway to stroll the streets, peruse the shops and galleries of Yellow Springs, explore the great outdoors at Glen Helen Nature Preserve and John Bryan State Park and have loads of family fun at Young’s Jersey Dairy.
