It’s no secret that the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing is a big deal this year, with Ohio native Neil Armstrong playing a major role in this iconic event. History buffs can mark the occasion with visits to a number of museums and other attractions, but what about those who want to celebrate all summer long…through food and drink?
Travelers who fall into that latter category are in luck, with various Ohio eateries and breweries offering moon-themed fare in honor of the anniversary:
Moon Menu Trail
From May 25-August 1, 12 businesses in Armstrong’s hometown of Wapakoneta are offering special menu items – from cinnaMOON pancakes and “Houston — We have a Pot Roast,” to sweet treats like “Starry, Starry Night Fudge,” AstroNut Lattes and Eclipse Mochas. Find some out-of-this-world flavors and try one (or all) of the trail’s 29 featured items.
Warped Wing Brewing in Dayton will release its annual Space Food IPA this summer, just in time for the lunar landing anniversary. The American India Pale Ale is named after the late Dayton engineer Maurice Krug, who literally invented the applesauce goop that astronauts first ate in outer space starting in the mid 1950s.
Land-Grant Brewing Company in Columbus has launched the Space-Grant Series, (usually) Black IPAs inspired by the depths of space – including the Tranquility Base made from the “best hops on Earth,” including the aptly named Apollo.
Fibonacci Brewing Company in Cincinnati will release a sour ale made with star fruit and local blueberries called Lower Gravity, which is a collaboration with a local beer and wine bar named Higher Gravity.
Cleveland’s Terrestrial Brewing Company serves up its Space Chimp beer, a witbier with guava and passion fruit, year round.
Phoenix Brewing Company of Mansfield will offer their Tangerine Berliner Weiss called Project Mercury, releasing in mid-June.
Velvet Ice Cream’s Blue Moon flavor, made of vanilla ice cream mixed with fruity flavoring and mini marshmallows, is available this summer at the company’s headquarters, Ye Olde Mill, in Utica.
Young’s Jersey Dairy will soon launch a space-themed flavor, Moon Rocks, a caramel flavored homemade ice cream with chocolate covered malt balls and marshmallows (moon rocks!). For those craving an even more indulgent treat, Young’s will also serve up two special dessert creations this June and July. The Over The Moon Sundae will feature two scoops of Young’s chocolate ice cream, marshmallow topping, whipped cream, nuts, a cherry AND an original mini-Moon Pie® while the Milky Way Milkshake is a thick shake with Sea of Tranquility Salty Caramel homemade ice cream, malt powder and chocolate sauce topped with whipped cream and a mini Milky Way® candy bar.
More Moon-themed Food & Drink
Storehouse Tea will offer the Harvest Moon Organic Black Tea, a fruity Chai tea that blends cardamom and clove with ginger, cinnamon, orange and apples. Find it at specialty shops around Ohio, and in the Celebrate Local store at Easton Town Center.
Send your tastebuds to the stratosphere with a Blastoff Burger at Giovanni’s Meats and Deli in Lyndhurst – tender select cuts of short rib, brisket, and steak trimmings make up these bites.
Looking for something you can bring home? Sample Meteorite Meatballs, also from Giovanni’s Meats and Deli. Made fresh, they’re then frozen and ready to cook for a meal anytime.
An added bonus? Bites from Giovanni’s (and Young’s Jersey Dairy – featured above) further showcase your Ohio pride – both are Ohio Proud locations.
