Solar Eclipse Sensation
By Theresa Russell

Grab your special eclipse glasses and head down to Toledo’s Imagination Station to celebrate the upcoming astronomical event. Starting two days before the solar eclipse itself, Imagination Station will be abuzz with a variety of hands-on activities for the family.

Inside activities, which require regular admission to Imagination Station, include exploring StarLab and the inflatable planetarium where you can ask all of your questions about the solar system. NASA videos explain everything about the eclipse and also will have a live feed of the event. Partners like the Toledo Astronomy Association and the University of Toledo Physics Department will share their knowledge on how they study the sky. For safe viewing of the event, you can make your own solar eclipse viewer at Imagination Station. For those wanting a quick, easy and safe solution, Imagination Station will distribute complimentary viewing glasses to their visitors between the hours of 12:30 and 3:30 on August 21. Quantities are limited, so get yours early!

On Monday, August 21, the day of the solar eclipse, many events will take place at  the adjoining Festival Park on the Maumee River from 10am to 5pm. These free activities include creating your own solar viewer, making giant bubbles, making solar cookers and proving their effectiveness by making s’mores. What solar event would be complete without a sun salutation for yoga enthusiasts? Join in the salute at noon. Of course, spending the afternoon for this lively event requires nourishment. Several food trucks-Beastro 4740, Deet’s BBQ, Nick & Nino’s Street Food, Eric’s Ice Cream, and Holy Toledough Donuts-will be parked at Festival Park to satisfy hungry viewers.

Eye safety is extremely essential for viewing this spectacular event. Do not stare at the sun, and do not use normal binoculars or telescopes. Doing so may cause permanent damage to your eyes. Imagination Station suggests reviewing these safety tips to protect your eyes during the eclipse, which in Toledo peaks at 2:27 and ends at 3:48. Take these recommendations seriously and resist the urge to look directly at the sun.

Get to Imagination Station early and prepare yourself for this seldom seen celestial event. Find a spot at Festival Park and enjoy this magical moment.
