La Plaza Tapatia is a long-running Mexican grocery store on Columbus' west side. It's been a neighborhood staple for years, and in March of 2021 it upgraded to a newer and bigger location across from the Hollywood Casino.
With its new 44,000 square foot digs, La Plaza has become a destination not only for grocery shopping, but for coffee, desserts, candy, dine-in meals, drinks and local food trucks.
Upon entering the store, guests are greeted with the bakery counter, where cakes, cookies, and other confections line the shelves. You could easily spend your entire visit just perusing the bakery; an entire aisle is dedicated to what the kitchen produces: fluffy breads and rolls, chocolate-glazed and cinnamon-dusted donuts, delicately laced conchas, custardy slices of cake, sugar cookies with jam.
If you're simply visiting to indulge your sweet tooth, head nearby to the ice cream counter, where dozens of colorful flavors wait for you. Don't miss the cases filled with paletas, popsicles filled with fresh fruit (you can find more ice cream, paletas and sundaes at several Mexican ice cream shops in Columbus!).
Next to the bakery is a new coffee bar that features locally roasted Crimson Cup Coffee. Guests can sip brewed coffee, espresso, cappuccinos, iced vanilla lattes, mochas, chai lattes, hot chocolate, tea and more. Then they can pick up a bag of Crimson Cup beans before they leave!
Traveling around the store, guests next run into the prepared foods sections, where you can purchase items by the pound to take home or to eat on-premises. La Plaza's new store includes a giant patio; local food trucks are often invited to park out front to serve guests. The cases are loaded with trays of flautas and tamales, chilaquiles and mole chicken, various beans and rices, and several different types of seafood and shrimp ceviche. Across from the prepared foods section sits a full bar featuring Mexican beers on tap, cocktails, and more.
Other departments include fresh produce, meat and seafood, dairy, and aisles of many standard Mexican and American grocery items. There's even a separate room dedicated solely to an international line of candies.
Whether it's for weekly grocery shopping or special foodie finds, La Plaza Tapatia has already become a destination for Columbus residents and visitors alike. And as a bonus: La Plaza has a second location coming soon to Tipp City!
