If you're thinking about making the long trip to one of the east coast's many beaches this summer, you may want to think again.

While many vacationers flock to destinations like Myrtle Beach, Daytona Beach or Virginia Beach, you can skip the crowds and spend some quality time right here along the shores of Lake Erie!

A trip to Lake Erie's beaches is fun and budget-friendly...and it’s all in Ohio. From taking the kids out for a day of building sand-castles and swimming, to adults wanting to work on their tan or simply to escape the chaos of life - there is a reason why people are in "Lake Erie Love".

Going to the beach is one of my favorite summer pastimes in Ohio. I’ve lived in Toledo, Sandusky and Cleveland. Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of exploring many of the amazing beaches that speckle the coast. Here are my personal favorites:

1) East Harbor State Park (Marblehead, Ohio) - Come enjoy the newly remodeled bath houses here and a view of the Lake Erie Islands on a clear day. This park is also home to campgrounds, trails and other outdoor fun.

2) Nickel Plate Beach (Huron, Ohio) - This beach is small, quaint and peaceful. Expect to pay a parking fee here, but if you attend often a pass is the best deal. Enjoy a view of Huron Lighthouse here. There are also volleyball courts on site, and more.

3) Huntington Beach (Bay Village, Ohio) - The gem of the west side of Cleveland, this beach is a swimmer’s paradise every summer. The beach is regularly raked to create clean, smooth sandy banks. As an added bonus,  there is a Mitchell’s Ice Cream hut on site - selling this favorite cool treat, along with food and beverages.

4) Edgewater Beach (Cleveland, Ohio) - This popular beach has been a staple for the City of Cleveland for decades. It’s care and maintenance was recently taken over by the Cleveland Metroparks and the beach is seeing new improvements every day. Here you can enjoy a scenic view of the city skyline. Public restrooms and picnic tables are on site.

5) Conneaut Township Park (Conneaut, Ohio) - This beach is vast. You won’t have trouble finding a spot for your beach towel and umbrella here. Also enjoy views of the Conneaut Lighthouse from the shore. Adults, pair a trip to this beach with a visit to Lake Erie Wine Country and the many wineries located in both in the Conneaut and Ashtabula areas.

These beaches are only a small portion of the coastal fun Lake Erie offers. For information on other beaches along the coast, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has a wonderful public access guide available online. Planning a trip to Ohio?
