Get the Scoop: Mardi Gras Homemade Ice Cream

The best finds are always the most unassuming, out-of-the-way places, right? Columbus is home to some terrific ice cream shops, from regional big-hitters with national followings to small mom-and-pop soft serve stands.

But it’s a true delight the first time you walk through the door of Mardi Gras Homemade Ice Cream on the city’s northwest side. At the shop, owners Mita and Dilip Shah craft a creative spread of flavors, including ones you won’t find anywhere else.

The Shahs came to own the shop in 2000, when Mita, who was a regular there, shared her recipe for mango ice cream with the owners. They loved it so much that they offered her a job, and in turn she offered to buy the business. They’ve kept all the classic ice cream flavors, like chocolate, vanilla, cookies and cream, strawberry, blueberries and cream, but the real draw is their menu of about 15-20 international flavors.

You can find Mardi Gras in a small strip mall on Hard Road. There’s plenty of parking out front, and a couple benches if you’re enjoying your ice cream there. (Obviously everything is sold to-go during the current coronavirus crisis.)

When you walk into the shop, take a look at the dry-erase board on the left wall. That lists the international flavors. Most are self-explanatory, but if you need to know more, don’t be afraid to ask.

Of these flavors, the best seller is the kesar pista, a creamy and lightly sweet blend of saffron, pistachio, almond and cardamom. One bite and you’ll be craving it again and again.

Other highlights from the specialized menu include mango (the flavor that landed Mita the shop!), anjeer (figs), ginger, sweet rose, kaju draksh (cashew raisin) or the pista kulfi (pistachio ice cream). Can’t decide? Get a trio sampler from the international menu!

The Shah’s creations have earned them acclaim all over the region; they were even featured in the New York Times in the summer of 2019!
