Juneteenth – June 19 – is a day celebrating the freeing of the last enslaved people on American soil. Taking place every June since 1865, the holiday marks the notification of African American slaves in Texas of the Emancipation Proclamation on June 19, 1865. Check out these Juneteenth events and festivals commemorating this historic day:
Juneteenth Festival in Cincinnati - June 16-20
Join Juneteenth Cincinnati for their 35th Annual Juneteenth Festival. There are several events throughout the days, like a Flag Raising on June 16 & 17, a Juneteenth Festival in Eden Park on June 18 (12-9PM), a Father's Day Concert on June 19 (2-6PM), and a Juneteenth Parade on June 20.
Juneteenth Celebration in Steubenville - June 17-20
Over four days, the city of Steubenville will have a series of events. Main events will be a festival on June 17 & 18, from 11AM - 8PM, and "Reflect and Celebrate." - an event at Historic Fort Steuben on June 20 (from 2-5PM).
All Day Blackness in Columbus - June 18
The Wexner Center for the Arts is hosting a daylong festival starting at 11AM. Several Black artists, organizations and businesses will be featured, along with a series of panels, hands-on activities and open mic.
Juneteenth Celebration in Toledo - June 18
Starting at 10AM, the Toledo Lucas County Public Library and NAACP Toledo hosts a series of all-day long events. There will be workshops, artistic programming, gallery shows and panels. And it ends with a Juneteenth Celebration on the library's rooftop from 8-10PM.
Juneteenth Celebration in Dayton - June 18
Dayton's Oregon District has a day of family-fun and activities for everyone. From 11AM - 2PM, enjoy face-painting, games and food from Black-owned food trucks.
Juneteenth on the AVE in Columbus - June 18
On Mt. Vernon Ave. (between 17th and St. Clair Ave.) from 12-6PM, find live entertainment and delicious food. The food trucks are part of the Taste of Juneteenth, a Black-owned food truck festival.
Freedom Fest in Cleveland - June 18
Cleveland Juneteenth is headed to Mall C in Downtown Cleveland from 12-10PM for a city-wide event filled with family entertainment, music and food. There will also be a vendor village featuring Black-owned businesses, plus performances by Grammy Award winning artists, and the Karuma House.
Fun Fact: Karamu House (founded in 1915) is the oldest, producing African American theatre in the U.S.
Juneteenth Celebration in Athens - June 18
Ohio University will have a Juneteenth Festival from 3-6PM on the College Green. Featuring live music, food, vendors and kids activities, everyone is welcome to attend throughout the day.
Note: OU is asking participants to bring a personal hygiene item/beauty product to donate.
Juneteenth Ohio Festival in Columbus - June 18-19
Head down to Genoa Park for the 25th Annual Juneteenth Ohio Festival. The two day festival features tone of entertainment including a concert series, talent show and classic car show. The event is free throughout the morning, until 3PM.
Juneteenth – Jubilee Day Festival in Columbus - June 19
The Ohio History Connection is commemorating the now Federal holiday with an event at Ohio Village on June 19 from 10AM - 5PM. The festival will display work by artists from the National Association of Black Storytellers, Ohio Black Dance and Watoto Storytellers.
