The Rutherford Café, located in Delaware, pays homage to the 19th president of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes. The former United States President was born in Delaware, Ohio in 1822. As his birthplace, the city of Delaware has an array of presidential themed locations and events, including a 7-foot, 700-pound bronze statue in his honor, an interpretive panel of Hayes' life, a bust at his namesake, Rutherford B. Hayes High School, and a historical marker at the site of his birthplace.
Located next door to his birthplace site, the café is an ideal place to refuel after exploring the historical Hayes sites and Downtown Delaware. The café space is small, with beautiful, exposed brick walls, a repurposed pallet wood ceiling and repurposed industrial tables.
Although seating is limited, if you can, snag at seat by the front window, it's a great spot to enjoy your delicious sandwich. The gourmet sandwiches are great for takeout as well.
The Rutherford Café is operated by the same owners as The Greater Gouda, a family-owned local specialty food and cheese shop. Bringing the best ingredients from The Greater Gouda, the café serves hearty Midwestern fare for breakfast and lunch. With an array of gourmet sandwiches and salads and a selection of vegan and gluten-free choices, there’s plenty of delicious options for every sandwich lover!
Patrons can expect unique and hearty sandwich creations like the beefy Raging Beast and The Rutherford, a classic Beefy Boy, the Vegan Hero, and an array of morning goodness breakfast sandwiches like Wrappin' Up Sunshine or Greens, Eggs & Ham. All sandwiches can be customized with a selection of bread or wrap choices, ala carte ingredients, and prepared toasted or melted.
For my husband and mine's visit, we selected the Ham A Lot and Beefy Boy, both melted on a pretzel bun. Now, I'm not a food writer, but I love food and can proclaim that both of our sandwiches were incredibly hearty, and they rank as one of the best deli sandwiches I've consumed in years!
If you're a foodie, you'll want to add this presidential sandwich shop to your list! The Rutherford Café is located at 9 East Williams Street, Delaware.
