Treat Yourself To Unique Ohio Spa Experiences

We all lead busy lives, and sometimes, even travel and leisure can become stressful. That’s why it’s so important to take time for rest and relaxation. While massage parlors and day spas can be around nearly every corner, there are also a number of unique spa experiences in Ohio that can be therapeutic and exciting. I’ve given a few a try and encourage others to also take a detour to these great locations!

Float Tank Sessions

Another way to get your salt fix is during a float tank session at places like Zen Float Center in Streetsboro, Gravity Spa Flotation Center in Beavercreek, or the TAO Float Loft in West Chester. One location I visited in Ohio with a float tank was the Bodhi Tree Guesthouse in Athens. This bed and breakfast offers meditative and therapeutic services such as Thai massages, private yoga classes, and of course a session in its very own float tank.

A float tank (also known as an isolation tank) is a rare experience that you just have to see to believe. It is a giant white pod filled with a high-density saltwater solution which is used to help ease the mind (from things like anxiety) and body (from things like muscle tension). The tank is a sound-proof and light-proof chamber that allows for ultimate solitude and relaxation.

During my visit at Bodhi Tree, I found the float tank to be a surreal sensation. you become completely suspended, with just your face peeking above the water as you lay on your back. It was a truly soothing one-hour session that everyone should try at least once!

Tranquility Salt Cave

Pink Himalyan salt lamps are growing in popularity these days, and can be found in many homes. Many enjoy these lamps for their calming effects, their health benefits, or for simply their beautiful aesthetics  Whatever the reason, you can now take your love of these stunning objects to a whole new level at the Tranquility Salt Cave, located in Worthington, just north of Columbus.

The Tranquility Salt Cave uses what is known as “halotherapy” (salt therapy) to provide deep relaxation and therapeutic healing to all its customers. I was told that being in the salt cave can be so good for your health because the rock salt contains trace minerals which the body absorbs. The pure salt that is found here is said to help folks who have breathing issues like allergies, asthma, and congestion, and skin conditions such as eczema and dermititis. I thankfully did not have any of these problems when I visited the Tranquility Salt Cave earlier this year. Instead, the purpose of my visit was purely to unplug and de-stress.

When I arrived at the Tranquility Salt Cave for my halotherapy session, I was greeted by friendly staff and asked to remove my shoes (but keep clean white socks on) before entering the “cave” for my 45-minute session. The room was spectacular (pictured above)! There were rock salt boulders lining the walls and tons of granulated salt on the heated floors! Small openings in the ceiling would pump pure salt into the air, releasing negative ions and beginning the calming session. There was soothing music, relaxing chairs and warm blankets to provide further comfort. The lights were dimmed, so all you could see were the ever-changing lights of the salt lamps situated around the room, and the hundreds of tiny lights on the ceiling that resembled the night sky.

I left my session in the Tranquility Salt Cave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated! It’s something you can do alone, or in groups, which I highly recommend. Other Ohio locations for halotherapy include: Serenity Salt Spa in Sunbury, the Centerville Salt RoomThe Salt Cave on Central in Van Wert, and the Mentor Salt Cave.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is an anti-inflammatory treatment involving skin exposure to ultra-low temperatures for a brief, controlled time, in order to help enhance athletic performance and recovery. It is gaining newfound popularity due to the many ways in which some say it can benefit your overall health. In addition to treating athletes and fitness enthusiasts for the common soreness that comes with being active, cryotherapy is also known to help with things like musco-skeletal injuries and certain skin disorders. It also can improve skin elasticity, increase energy, and help you achieve a better mood and a good night’s sleep.

Cryotherapy Plus was Ohio’s first full-service whole body cryotherapy center (others that exist in Ohio include Elite Cryotherapy in Avon, Ohio Cryo in Dublin and Columbus, and US Cryotherapy in Dayton). Cryotherapy Plus in Akron gained noteriety when NBA superstar LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers revealed Cryotherapy Plus as one of his “secrets” to his success, as it helps speed his muscle recovery.

As an avid runner and fitness junkie, I have had my fair share of aches, pains, and even minor sports injuries. As much as I do not enjoy being subjected to cold temperatures, I was eager to give cryotherapy a try. The CryoSauna is a cylindrical chamber that pumps air as cold as anything you would find in Antarctica! The liquid nitrogen air circulated is extremely dry and reaches temperatures as low as -293 degrees Fahrenheit! The session lasts for 2-3 minutes (no longer than that). Your head stays out and above the tank, and you must keep your hands and body from touching the sides of the tank.

Entering the chamber, I was a bit nervous, but the staff assured me that the process is incredibly safe. They stayed in the room with me the entire time (a technician will ALWAYS be present while someone is using the tank – no one is permitted to be in the tank unsupervised).

When I stepped out of the tank, my body immediately began to reheat and come back to normal!  I had a smile on my face, and a rush of adrenaline. I felt energized and refreshed. All of this is possible due to the fact that the liquid nitrogen vapor “tricks” your brain into thinking that the body is freezing, which then triggers production of anti-inflammatory proteins in your bloodstream. If you are active in any way, want to experience the benefits of cryotherapy, or you are simply curious and want a “chill thrill,” look into a cryotherapy session!

Mud Wraps

One final spa treatment to highlight is a good old fashioned mud wrap. These are becoming rather common ways to help detox and exfoliate the body. Just as it sounds, a mud wrap involves covering the body with mineral-rich “mud” that helps to treat the skin.

Some great spots to get a mud wrap in Ohio include: the Woodhouse Day Spa in Dayton and Columbus, Callatis Spa in Akron, the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls in Logan, the Spa at Glenmoor in Canton, and even Kalahari Resorts in Sandusky.
