The sweetness of summer is upon us, why not visit one of Ohio’s many u-pick fruit farms to enjoy the abundance of fresh, ripe fruit! Whether you prefer one type of berry or enjoy all of summer’s fruit bounty, Ohioans are fortunate to live in a state that produces plentiful crops of summertime berries, fruits and vegetables.
Located in Champaign County (in southwest Ohio and less than 45 miles from Columbus and Dayton), Champaign Berry Farm is the perfect place for raspberry lovers! Since 1995, the family-owned and operated farm has been providing fresh berries to u-pick customers, wholesalers and farmers markets. With more than twenty acres of raspberries (red and black) and a small crop of gooseberries, visitors will find plenty of delicious berries to satisfy their summer fresh berry cravings.
Grab a picking container from the farm (or you can bring your own) and they will direct you to a row of raspberries to pick. Picking raspberries is a relatively easy activity, since the plant grows upward, most of the fruit will be waist high so you don’t have to bend over to pluck the fruit. Also, watch for thorns, stinging insects and uneven ground. I would suggest to start berry picking in the early morning, wear casual clothes and sunscreen, bring a hat and have fun! It becomes like a treasure hunt, finding the ripest berries, and I was surprised at how quickly time goes by. We spent over an hour picking more than four pounds of delicious black and red raspberries!
Visiting an Ohio u-pick fruit farm is the perfect summer outing for the entire family! With temperature changes and large crowds, crop availability can vary. Before visiting a farm, check directly with the farm for peak picking dates and fruit availability. Happy picking!
