Weave Your Own Wool with Hotel LeVeque

A hands-on introduction to Columbus, the Midwest fashion capital!

Weaving Wool

Today’s sophisticated traveler seeks experiential immersion, which leaves a lasting impression of the journey. Fast forward to a new package that combines agriculture, design and fashion. Starting at the art-deco Hotel LeVeque, the downtown Columbus icon, guests will first plunge into the hotel’s focus on local products including locally designed uniforms worn by staff, amenities like candles and in-room toiletries, and a turn-down service that includes locally made sweets.

Wool to Wearer

The Farm-To-Fashion package offers both a half-day and full-day option. The longer option includes a visit to the Fairie Haven Farm in nearby Orient, Ohio. Fiber artist, Rachel Najjar, raises Lincoln Longwool sheep, a once popular breed from Lincolnshire, England. Producing long, luxurious and curly longs, these large sheep come in white or a range of blacks, greys and silvers.

Down on the Farm

Visit the farm and meet the sheep, all of whom are named. During that visit, Rachel prepares a meal using natural and organic ingredients, some of which are grown right on the farm. The homemade bread is a big hit with guests.

Before leaving the farm, be sure to take a good look at the sheep, whose wool is sourced by designer Celeste Malvar-Stewart. Celeste can identify which wool comes from which sheep. A piece of this threatened breed of sheep becomes integrated into the custom designs that Celeste lovingly creates. Using the wool from the Lincoln Longwools saves the breed from extinction and ensures sustainability.

Up at the Studio

Returning to Celeste’s studio back in Columbus, you will have the opportunity to create their own custom-designed felted scarf during a three-hour workshop. The visit begins with an introduction to natural fabrics, dyes and sustainable fashion design. Starting with a piece of silk backing to which is eventually added a selection of wool, participants are guided by Celeste who offers encouragement to freely explore an individual design. You can choose from a variety of wool and Celeste will name the sheep of origin: Gandalf, Christian Dior, Jan, Lavender and others. Laying down the wool while envisioning a personal design allows creative energies to flow and at the same time creates a relaxing atmosphere that leaves behind stress.

The studio time includes instruction, all materials, light snacks/drinks, and handmade scarf to take home. The package immerses guests into the fashion world of Columbus, from wool to wearer!
