The crowds are gone, the colors are great, and fall is in the air. Here in Ohio, you’ll find three types of campgrounds: private, state parks, or Wayne National Forest. To begin your search of campgrounds with the best fall color, check the fall color map created by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, updated regularly as the season progresses.
Pro tip: campgrounds with lots of deciduous trees will display more colors than one with evergreens, and trees at a higher elevation will change colors sooner.
Ohio campgrounds also offer many options including horse camps, primitive camps and group camps. Even if you don’t have your own camping gear, you won’t be left out! It’s possible to rent a camp (entirely set up for you) or rent a cabin in a campground. Truly everyone can partake in a colorful fall camping experience. Ready to go?
Be sure to research your desired destination in advance to confirm availability. Some campgrounds remain open year-round, while others close after peak season. Additionally, some campgrounds accept reservations. Here are a few suggestions to get your started!
Ohio State Parks
A plethora of gorgeous parks dot the Ohio map. You’re sure to find both your favorite and a new one to discover! Burr Oak, Shawnee, Findley and Hueston Woods all showcase their colors during the fall, and reflections in the nearby lakes and ponds enhance the views.
Wayne National Forest
More remote, the campgrounds throughout Wayne National Forest include primitive camps off-the-beaten path. Hilly terrain makes up a significant portion of this vast area, so you’ll find fall colors high and low. Combine the gorgeous views with a hike, a campfire, or a sky full of stars – you’re sure to have a beautiful, memorable camping getaway!
