July is National Ice Cream Month, and there's no sweeter place to celebrate than Ohio. It ranks among the top ice cream-producing states, and with scores of indie ice cream makers sprinkled from Lake Erie to the Ohio River, Ohio even boasts an Ice Cream Trail.
Want to explore – and enjoy! – Ohio's unique scoop shops? These outstanding destinations dish up a wide array of cool, creamy and delightful melt-in-your mouth treats.
Taggart's Ice Cream Parlor and Restaurant in Canton
While Canton is renowned for being the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, one of its best-kept secrets is Taggart's - a hometown favorite for homemade ice cream since the 1920s. With its nostalgic marble counters and curlicue wrought iron chairs, Taggart's remains a throwback to the decade when team owners met in Canton to form the National Football League.
Don't forget to try The Bittner. It's a gloriously gooey combination of vanilla ice cream and made-from-scratch chocolate syrup topped with roasted pecans.
Mason's Creamery in Cleveland
It's small batch ice cream with big time flavor, when you visit Mason's Creamery. This spot serves up some seriously cool vibes (and ice cream of course!), like vanilla and lemonade sorbet, partnerships with Great Lakes Brewing, Vegan Almond Joy soft serve, Black Sesame and Thai Tea ice cream and more.
Mason's is constantly reinventing the wheel so while you may not know what will be on the menu that day, it's sure to be outstandingly delicious.
Highland's Ice Creamery in Chillicothe
With a menu that features shakes, sundaes and the classic cone, Highland's Ice Creamery offers up the perfect treat for those summer days. And with hand-dipped Johnson's Ice Cream, you'll be supporting even more Ohio ice cream!
The Cone in West Chester
Known as one of the Cincinnati-area's best soft serve spots, this iconic ice cream shop is a can't miss. With special flavors and a building shaped like a classic cone, you'll be in for a real sweet time. And if you need a smaller size, check out their Mobile Cone.
Jacky's Depot in Maumee
A little south of Toledo is one of the best ice cream spots in Northwest Ohio. Jacky's Depot has everything from traditional ice cream, to vegan ice cream and even ice pops. One of their most unique menu items are the Ice Cream Nachos - scoops of soft serve ice cream served with waffle cone chips and up to three toppings.
Mardi Gras Homemade Ice Cream in Columbus
This ice cream shop on Columbus' northwest side has all the classic ice cream flavors, like chocolate, vanilla, cookies and cream and strawberry. But the real draw is their menu of about 15-20 international flavors. Of their international flavors, the bestseller is the kesar pista - a creamy and lightly sweet blend of saffron, pistachio, almond and cardamom.
