Take a Day Trip to Springfield

Springfield is located 45 minutes west of Columbus and approximately halfway between the state capital and Dayton. The city was once home to some of the greatest entrepreneurs and manufacturing giants of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Now Springfield is a city on the rise once again.

The Heritage Center of Clark County

With historical architecture, quaint shops and local restaurants, a lively arts and culture scene (home to the longest-running Summer Arts Festival in the country!), exhilarating outdoor adventures and a welcoming small-town atmosphere, Springfield makes for a great Ohio weekend getaway.

Springfield is my hometown, so let me take you on a tour of my favorite spots in town.

NOTE: Please check directly with the venues and attractions before your visit to stay up to date on all safety precautions and guidelines surrounding COVID-19.

Best Places to Explore

South Fountain Historic District

The South Fountain Historic District has the highest concentration of remaining late 19th and early 20th century homes in the area and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Westcott House

Designed by the famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright in 1908, the Westcott House is the only Prairie style home of Wright’s in Ohio. To view the beautifully restored interior, visitors must join a Docent-Guided tour.

Hartman Rock Garden

Comprised of 250,000 stones, the Hartman Rock Garden started as a backyard project in 1932. Now it’s a beloved local exhibit, free to visitors to pursue the stone castles, a White House replica and so much more.

Springfield Museum of Art

As the only Smithsonian Affiliate Art Museum in Ohio, the Springfield Museum of Art offers seven exhibit galleries housing collections from Ohio artists and traveling exhibits.

Art Murals

Take a self-guided tour of Downtown Springfield’s vibrant art murals and signal box wraps. Two of my favorite murals are "Greetings from Springfield" (located at 22 N. Fountain Ave.) and "Rose City" (located at 14 E. Main St.).

Exhilarating Outdoor Adventures

ECO Sports Corridor Whitewater Park

For the ultimate adventure seeker, ECO Sports Corridor offers four whitewater kayaking areas.

Mad River Gorge & Nature Preserve

The Mad River Gorge & Nature Preserve has 91 acres of natural landscapes with hiking trails, access to the Mad River, natural dolomite cliffs (some reaching 50 feet in height, perfect for rock climbing) and plenty of bird watching opportunities.

Buck Creek State Park

With 1,800+ acres of wetlands and broad meadows and a 2000-acre reservoir, Buck Creek State Park offers an array of outdoor activities.

Little Miami Scenic Trail & Ohio Erie Trail Bike Path

The Little Miami Scenic Trail offers 78 miles (within the Springfield region) of multi-use paths for cyclists and connects to the Ohio-to-Erie Trail for another 300+ miles of trails.

Where to Eat & Shop

A few of my favorite places to eat in Springfield are: Mike & Rosy’s Deli, Schuler’s Bakery (the best donuts in Ohio!), Stella Bleu Bistro, Speakeasy Ramen, Cecil and Lime, Le Torte Dolci Bakery and the restaurants at COhatch (The Painted Pepper, Ironworks and Fresh Abilities).

Grab a craft beer at Mother Stewart’s Brewing and fuel up on caffeine at Coffee Expressions or Winans Chocolate & Coffees.

Shop for one-of-a-kind gifts at Champion City Guide + Supply, Hatch Artist Studio, Heart of Ohio Antique Center (the largest indoor antique mall in the country!) and The Peanut Shoppe

Where to Stay

Simon Kenton Inn

Located on the original historic property of Simon Kenton, the early 1800’s inn has been upgraded for the comfort of guests. The historic Simon Kenton Inn has four guest rooms with private bathrooms, in addition to three luxury treehouses, a caretaker’s cottage and a barn with four guest rooms.

Emma’s Bed & Breakfast

Emma’s Bed & Breakfast is housed in an historic property built in 1833 and offers five guest rooms with private bathrooms.

Go Exploring

Be sure to visit Young’s Jersey Dairy, Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve, John Bryan State Park, Yellow Springs, the historic Clifton Mill and Brandeberry Winery, all just a short drive from Downtown Springfield.

There’s always something new to explore when visiting my hometown of Springfield!
